PROGRAM

Toru Takemitsu: Day Signal -Signals from Heaven I

Dmitri Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77

Igor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite

Sergei Prokofiev: Scythian Suite, Op. 20

INFO

Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 is a powerful fusion of icy reserve, lyrical depth, biting wit, and dazzling virtuosity. Taking on this emotionally charged masterpiece is violinist Richard Lin, First Prize winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis — a performance not to be missed.

Igor Stravinsky, stepping away from his usual eccentricity, channels the elegance of 18th-century Baroque in Pulcinella Suite, blending neoclassical charm with modern wit. In stark contrast, Sergei Prokofiev's Scythian Suite, drawn from his early ballet score, bursts with raw energy, folk-driven intensity, and sonic force — a piece that must be experienced live to be truly felt.

Also featured is Day Signal -Signals from Heaven I by Toru Takemitsu, written in 1987 for two brass ensembles. Interweaving like celestial voices, the two groups create a sound world both solemn and transcendent.

Led by Conductor Emeritus Shao-Chia Lü, the NSO opens the concert with brilliance and flair.
