Concerts devoted to music for film are highly popular these days. The NSO’s music director Shao-Chai Lü has put together a most imaginative program of this kind. Many people like to visualize while listening to music, even when the composer had no intention of their doing so. Schoenberg’s Music to Accompany a Film Scene is actually an open invitation to do just that. In fact the film itself doesn’t even exist. Or rather, it exists only in each listener’s imagination, accompanied by music to hear with eyes wide shut. George Lucas’ Star Wars series and Sergei Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky are film classics, each with sumptuous scores for large orchestra that heighten the dramatic impact of the scenes they accompany. They are almost like second screenplays.
