Yi-Jung Su

Bassist Yi-Jung Su is a solo bassist whose musicality and technical perfection have earned her an international reputation. As the recipient for numerous awards, Ms. Su was distinguished as the first woman in the 47 years of history to win International Society of Bassists Solo Competition and the first double bassist to win Music Teachers National Association Young Artist String Competition in the 50 years of its history. A few months prior, she also became the 2nd prize winner of 2010Berlin International Double Bass Solo Competition in Germany. She has also received numerous other prizes such as the 1st prize of the Double Bass Symposium Competition in Pittsburgh, prize winner of the International Society of Bassists Competition at 16-18 division, winner of the New England Conservatory Lars-Erik Larsson Concerto Competition, and winner of the Interlochen Arts Academy concerto competition. Her playing was referred to by double bassist Edwin Barker as “Her musicianship and performing style reflect an inquisitive musical mind and a superior technical control on the double bass. Her bass playing is characterized by a big, rich tone, expressive, “vocal” phrasing, and exceptional technical ease on the instrument.”

Not only Ms. Su is recognized as an accomplished solo bassist, but also an excellent ensemble player. In November 2013, she was invited to perform with chamber ensemble“Taiwan Connection”under the direction of Nai-Yuan Hu. In July, 2012 and 2013, Ms. Su was invited to the Verbier Music Festival. She also spent two seasons with the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach in 2007 and 2008.

Ms. Su volunteered to play for numbers of Marathon injured patients during the Boston Marathon Bombing Incident, while surgical and trauma units were dealing with exceptional levels of stress and anxiety. She wishes to help the community with her ability as a musician and performer.

Ms. Su was born native of Taiwan, she received her Bachelor degree at New England Conservatory and master degree at Boston University of fine arts. Her instructors included Edwin Barker, Todd Seeber, Derek Weller, Zi-Ping Chen, Claudia Chen, Yung-Chiao Wei, and Emilee Kuo.

Yi-Jung Su is currently the associate principal bass of Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, and teaches in universities such as National Taiwan Normal University of Music, Kao-Hsiung Normal University of Music, and Ching-Hua University of Music.
