Shao-Chia Lü returns to the podium for the final orchestral program of the season, in which the season’s theme of “Carrying Forward the Heritage of Time” is unmistakably in evidence. Works by Bach and Brahms originally composed for small forces (keyboard and piano quartet, respectively) have been reimaged for full orchestra by twentieth-century composers who, ironically, are remembered mostly for their twelve-tone music that many listeners find difficult to comprehend. How they refashioned old-fashioned music into full orchestral scores provides testament to the enduring greatness of the original music and to the skill Webern and Schoenberg demonstrate in their orchestrations.
