NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade, Op. 35
Shao-Chia Lü has put together a most fascinating program that takes the listener on a journey through four very different cultures. Introducing the program is a sensuously beautiful number from the ballet score Spartacus by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, danced by the title character and his wife. Bloch’s Schelomo (Solomon) expresses, in the composer’s own words, “the complex, glowing, agitated [Jewish] soul that I feel vibrating throughout the Bible.” Ching-Mei Lin’s Paean for Warriors and Love is inspired by traditional songs of Taiwan’s Rukai tribe. To close, Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling orchestration takes us into the fabled world of the Arabian Nights in tales of intrigue and adventure as told by the enchantress Scheherazade.
