ANDRÉ CAPLET: Conte fantastique (The Masque of Red Death)
CLAUDE DEBUSSY:La Chute de la Maison Usher (short opera based on Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, unfinished)

Intricate, macabre and full of suspense, Edgar Allan Poe’s writing are still enthralling after 170 years. His works have become an inspiration across literature, music, film, television and contemporary popular culture. French composer André Caplet wrote his fantasy based on Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death-- a tale of an indifferent prince who thought he could shut the plague out of his court but eventually could not escape the pursuit of death. Caplet’s use of strings and harp create the thrilling suspense in the story. Devoted to Poe’s works, Claude Debussy worked on an opera based on his novel, The Fall of the House of Usher. Although it was never completed, Debussy’s unfinished score still demonstrates an astonishing quality. As a tribute to Debussy’s 100th death anniversary (1862-1918), this will be the premiere of the piece in Taiwan. Do not miss it!
