A virtuoso pianist with maturity beyond his years, Brahms reinterpreted the classical composition and the tradition of absolute music in the rise of the romantic period. At the same time, by artfully infusing powerful emotion into gypsy folk music, he created masterpieces that were rigorous yet charming, demonstrating craftsmanship while connecting to the people. Like Wagner, he also admired Beethoven greatly. He showed this affinity to the master in his adventurous use of complicated chords under the disguise of beautiful classical melodies. His firm roots in the Classical masterpieces gave him the ease and freedom in variations. In various combinations of instruments and vocal, we will explore Brahms’ music in this concert; a world that seems conservative but pioneering, gentle yet powerful.
