New Year’s Eve concerts with the NSO are always special events, always something different, unexpected, exciting, thoroughly enjoyable and fun. This year there are two such events, one on December 30, the other on the 31st. The one on December 30 is devoted to an evocation of Spain. Of the five composers on the program, only one was actually Spanish (de Falla), but the others certainly knew how to conjure up the sights, sounds and flavors of this sunny, Mediterranean land – the French Ravel with his zesty Rapsodie espagnole, the American Frank Proto with his virtuosic Carmen Fantasy featuring trumpet soloist Reinhold Friedrich, the Italian Corelli with his fantasy on the harmonic pattern called La Follia (believed to have originated on the Iberian peninsula), and another Frenchman, Jules Massenet, with his grand opera Le Cid, set in Spain.
