MAX BRUCH: Eight Pieces, Op. 83
JOHANNES BRAHMS: Clarinet Trio, Op. 114

The NSO Artist-in Residence Wen-Sinn Yang, the principal clarinet May-Lin Ju, and the piano master Chiao-Han Liao will bring us a night full of the essence of Romantic period, as a one-in-a-million clarinet trio. Clarinet trio can be virtuoso, and also expressively singing, but what remains the same is the intimacy between the composer and performers. Brahms’ clarinet trio is composed for his close friend, Muelfeld. The whispers of chalumeau, and the chanting of the cello build up the inner world for only close friend can see. Bruch had lived all his life under the shadow of Brahms, and only his violin concertos made him famous. The eight short pieces he composed for his beloved son contain the discipline of Brahms, and the lyrical expression of Schumann. They can stop at the second of sprouting; they can be the shy and timid silhouettes; they can be thousands of stunning freeze-frames. Yang’s prime choices of repertoire allow you to know the Bruch that you didn’t.
