The NSO’s annual New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day concerts this year celebrate its 30th anniversary season in two big ways: (1) the audience is invited to help choose the music performed; and (2) musicians from the orchestra are featured as soloists in concertos. The opening and closing works at each concert will be different, and will be determined by voting from the public. Also different on each program will be the concerto content, maximizing the number of outstanding musicians drawn from Taiwan: Brahms’s majestic Double Concerto (with violinist Nai-Yuan Hu and cellist Wen-Sinn Yang), Bach’s sprightly Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (all strings), Beethoven’s grandiose Emperor Concerto (with pianist Yu-Chiou Tchen), and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for the unusual solo combination of oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. Common to both programs will be the participation of the Taipei Philharmonic Choir, which joins the orchestra for the sensational finale of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony. Which concert to attend? Both, of course!
