WEN-SINN YANG, cello
ROBERT SCHUMANN: Cello Concerto, Op. 129, A minor
ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD: Cello Concerto, Op. 37, C major
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 5, Op. 67, C minor
Shao-Chia Lü leads the NSO in a program of Austro-German music designed to appeal to every concertgoer. His soloist is the Swiss cellist Wen-Sinn Yang, Artist-in-Residence for the current season, born to Taiwanese parents and now living in Germany. Yang plays two concertos, both of romantic persuasion. Schumann’s is one of the most beloved in the repertory. The composer’s wife Clara remarked that “the romantic quality, the weaving of cello and orchestra are indeed wholly ravishing, and what euphony and deep feeling one finds in all the melodic passages!” The concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold is no less romantic, and in fact is derived from a film score about a love affair (Deception, 1946). Korngold’s glowing orchestration is richly textured, romantically conceived, and awash in a thousand glistening hues. The concert opens with a tone poem about that quintessential lover Don Juan, and closes with the world’s most popular symphony.
